Tom Devisscher

He/Him
Co-Founder & Chair

OAC started the way the best ideas do: Tom wanted to get outside with his best friends, and the gear was the only thing standing in the way. What began as a solution to that specific problem grew into the organisation you are looking at now. He built it alongside Andrew, and the two of them have been figuring it out together ever since. Tom is based in Ottawa and spends as much time as possible on Quebec crown land, where the portages are real, the lakes are quiet, and the nearest hardware store is a long drive back. He paddles, boat camps, hikes, and fills the in-between hours with small campsite improvements: a better system for the tarp, a rock moved to level the kitchen spot, a log rolled into a just-right bench height. Ask him about any of these projects and he will tell you more than you expected. By day he is a software engineer. By every other available hour, he is outside with Mac, his Jack Russell terrier, who has strong opinions about campsites and limited patience for portaging.

Andrew Duyvestyn

He/Him
Co-Founder & President

OAC started with a shared conviction: the outdoors are better with people you love in them. Andrew and Tom built the organisation together, each arriving at the same idea from the same direction, which is what tends to happen when two people have been paying attention to the same things for long enough. What began as a way to lower the barrier for friends to get outside has become something neither of them could have built alone. Andrew is, by his own description and Mac's thorough field testing, punchy, compact, and energetic. Mac is the Jack Russell terrier he shares with Tom, and Mac has opinions about this characterisation that he expresses mainly through sprinting. The comparison holds. Based in Ottawa, Andrew spends his outdoor hours camping, hiking, and building fires with the kind of quiet efficiency that comes from actually knowing what you are doing. The fire is going before most people have finished debating where to put the tent. By day he is a web developer, which means he builds things carefully and fixes them when they break, a skill set that transfers well to both codebases and camp kitchens.
